Once in Senaru, you will complete your registration and attend a short briefing with your guide to learn about the tour procedures and prepare for your journey.

Visit to Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls

Our adventure begins with a visit to the stunning Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls, located at the foot of Mount Rinjani in Senaru village. We start by purchasing entrance tickets before heading to the waterfalls.

First, we will visit Sendang Gile waterfall, which is closer to the entrance and only a 20-minute walk away. This proximity makes it a popular spot for both local and international tourists. Along the way, we will walk through a beautiful protected forest, part of Rinjani National Park, with comfortable stairs made from various-sized stones leading to the waterfall.

Next, we will proceed to Tiu Kelep waterfall, which requires a more challenging 40-minute trek. The path is steep and includes crossing shallow, clear rivers. Your guide will assist you as we navigate this route, which is flanked by calm, small streams on either side. The name “Tiu Kelep” comes from the Sasak language, with “Tiu” meaning pool and “Kelep” meaning fly. In contrast, “Sendang Gile” is derived from a legend about a prince hiding from a crazed lion behind the waterfall. Both waterfalls are believed by locals to have healing properties. After visiting these natural wonders, we will return to the hotel for lunch.

Traditional Senaru House Tour

After lunch, we will visit the traditional Senaru houses, which are prime examples of the ancient architecture in Bayan. These houses feature wooden poles set on stone foundations, with walls made of woven bamboo. The roofs are constructed with wooden trusses and bamboo elements, covered with layers of dried reeds tied to each rafter. The roofs are capped with two bamboo slats that form a distinctive pattern. Traditional cooking methods in these homes help to dry the reeds on the roof.

Visit to the Traditional Mosque in Bayan

Next, we will visit the traditional mosque in Bayan, located in Beleq Village. Built in the 16th century by an Islamic missionary, this mosque showcases a blend of Islamic and Hindu-Java architectural influences. The mosque has a square shape with 125 cm high bamboo-woven walls and a roof resembling a meru, topped with a wooden crown-like decoration. To enter, you must bow slightly due to the low doorway. Inside, you will find a dirt floor and a well-preserved bedug, a large drum used to signal prayer times. The four pillars inside symbolize the unity of the four villages involved in its construction.

Surrounding the mosque are six additional buildings, each housing the graves of Bayan’s Muslim ancestors, including the first Islamic missionary and early Muslim settlers of Bayan. To the north of the mosque, you will find two more graves. After exploring this historical site, you can visit a local souvenir shop in front of the Bayan Beleq mosque, where you can purchase miniatures of the mosque and other traditional Lombok crafts, such as handwoven textiles. Finally, we will return to the hotel to conclude our day.
