Senaru – Bayan Cultural Package (Half Day)

Upon your arrival in Lombok, whether it be at the airport or the harbor, our team will be there to welcome you and transport you to our hotel and office in Senaru. Once in Senaru, you’ll complete your registration and participate in a briefing session with your guide, during which you’ll learn about the trek procedures and prepare for the upcoming adventure.

Traditional Senaru House Visit

Your first excursion will be to visit the traditional Senaru houses, which showcase the ancient architecture of Bayan. These houses are built on stone foundations with wooden poles. The cemented floors are level with the foundation, and the walls are crafted from woven bamboo. The roof structure features wooden trusses, with bamboo purlins, rafters, and battens supporting layers of dried reeds tied to each rafter. The roof is topped with a unique pattern formed by two bamboo slats. The traditional cooking methods used in these homes contribute to the drying of the reeds on the roof.

Traditional Mosque in Bayan

Next, you’ll visit the traditional mosque in Bayan, located in Beleq Village. Constructed in the 16th century by an Islamic missionary, this mosque reflects the architectural blend of Hindu-Java influences that preceded Islam in the region. The mosque has a square base, with bamboo woven walls standing 125 cm high, and a roof shaped like a meru, topped with a wooden crown-like decoration. Entry requires a slight bow due to the low doorway. Inside, you’ll find a dirt floor and a well-preserved bedug, a large drum used to signal prayer times. The four pillars inside represent the unity of four villages involved in its construction.

Surrounding the mosque are six additional buildings of varying sizes, which house the graves of Bayan’s Muslim ancestors, including the first Islamic missionary and the early Muslim settlers of Bayan. To the north of the mosque, you’ll find two more graves. After exploring this historic site, you can visit a local souvenir shop in front of the Bayan Beleq mosque. Here, you can purchase miniatures of the mosque and other traditional Lombok crafts, such as handwoven textiles. After enjoying these cultural artifacts, you will return to the hotel for lunch.
